宁芜地区是长江中下游铁、铜成矿带中重要的成矿区之一。在成矿区带新一轮1/5万区域地质调查中,根据可分性(基本单位根据岩石组合/岩石类型来划分、要有明显的岩性差异或标志岩层,考虑正常沉积岩系和火山岩系的差异)、可填性(考虑岩石组合/岩石类型的厚度或图面分布的大小,平面上或剖面上应可表达)、服务于地质找矿等原则,运用现代地层学和陆相层序地层学理论,在前人研究的基础之上,将该地区中生代岩石地层划分了12个岩石地层单位(组),2个非正式岩石地层单位(火山岩带和火山岩锥),34个填图单元(段)。建议将该地区燕山运动以来火山喷发岩系的龙王山旋回、大王山旋回所形成的火山岩和火山碎屑岩组划入白垩系,将白垩系的底界拟放在西横山组与北象山组之间。此外,与溧水、庐枞等长江中下游
