The morphology of central nerve terminals is highly heterogeneous, but little is known how structural differences impact spatiotermporal profile of Ca2+ transients and quantal output.Taking advantage of the mature calyx of Held synapses which are decorated with different levels of segmentation, namely varying number of stems, stalks and swellings, we examined roles of the structural variability at maturity (P16-23).
