  Although supercritical fluid chromatography was demonstrated in 1962, its applications had been quite narrowly limited due to the difficulties on SFC instruments availability for near 40 years, which are partly attributed to the misunderstanding on the properties of supercritical carbon dioxide.Nevertheless, the "green" SFC has shown incomparable advantages in terms of fast separation, fast reequilibration, allowing steep gradients, and toluene of significant amount of water, modest pressure drops, and non-flammable.Moreover, benefit from the low viscosity of supercritical carbon dioxide, multiple columns can be scanned simultaneously on an analytical SFC instrument, which offers a powerful tool to shorten the time for establishing separation methods, especial for chiral separations.In addition, significant reduction of organic solvent in preparative SFC has also attracted a lot of attention from pharmaceutical companies for the aspects of safety and cost.
