Preparation and properties of PHEMA hydrogel material

  Poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogel material was synthesized by polymerization with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as raw material, ammonium persulfate and sodium pyrosulfite (APS/SMBS) as initiator, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as crosslinker.The effects of initiator and crosslinker concentration, reaction time and temperature were investigated.The results showed that initiator of 0.6wt%,crosslinker of 1.0wt%, monomer concentration of 75wt%, temperature of 50℃ and reaction time of 32h were the best reaction conditions.It was found that the PHEMA hydrogel prepared under the optimum conditions possessed a high mechanical strength with a tensile strength of 0.32MPa.Furthermore, the equilibrium water content and light transmittance of this hydrogel reached 42.76% and 92% respectively.It can be used as the central material of the artificial cornea.
