  The mechanisms of the binding of Ca2+ ions to two typical polyuronates,alginate and pectin,have been investigated in details.Three distinct steps can be distinguished.These are mono-complexation,dimerization,and lateral association of dimers,which form successive processes associated with the binding of Ca2+ to alginate.The boundaries between these steps are critical,indicating that the evolution of alginate chains from single forms,to dimers and further to multimers are not a regularly progressive process.Furthermore,it is observed that the association mode depends on the molecular weight of alginate chains.Two different association modes are proposed for short rigid and long flexible alginate chains.Pectin shows both similarities and dissimilarities with alginate in terms of Ca2+ binding.These will also be covered in the presentation.
