Mesoporous silica nanoparticles are excellent adsorbents due to their high surface areas, tunable pore sizes and versatile surface properties which can be tailored for specific applications.Covalent surface modification of mesoporous silica nanoparticles can be used to optimize the adsorption of a specific contaminant by providing better sites for bindng or electrostatic interactions.Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can be incorporated into mesoporous silica materials to couple the magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles with the adsorption properties of both iron oxide and mesoporous silica.
