In order to explore the contributions of wet deposition and surface runoff formed by rainfall events to the water body mercury burden in Three Gorges Reservoir,we conducted a one-year successive study on the deposition fluxes and runoff output characteristics of total mercury(THg)and methylmercury(TMeHg)in a typical small agricultural watershed in Three Gorges Reservoir area. The results showed that the annual average values and annual deposition fluxes of THg and TMeHg in rainfall were 34.35±27.31 ng?L-1 and 0.347±0.218 ng?L-1,12.43 ?g m-2 yr-1 and 174.00 ng m-2 yr-1,respectively.Moreover,both THg and TMeHg were dominated by the particulate phase. The annual average concentrations and output fluxes of THg and TMeHg in surface runoff were 10.40±6.48 ng?L-1 and 0.154±0.146 ng?L-1,1.17±0.73 ?g m-2 yr-1 and 17.26±16.36 ng m-2 yr-1,respectively.Combining with deposition fluxes, the retention rates of THg and TMeHg in study area were 90.59%and 90.08%,respectively.However,the two sub-catchments exhibited different retention effects, and retention rate was affected by human activities, climate, topography and geomorphology, land use,and other factors.
