From the Mediterranean to the Pacific Two thousand years ago,the superpowers in the Mediterranean world fought bloody wars around Sicily to control the resources of the region. The consequences: many innocent lost their lives;the whole Mediterranean economy was in disarray. Two thousand years hence, superpowers located around the Pacific are involved again in a contest similar in nature but potentially more destructive in outcome. The battlefields--not just confined to the Asian-Pacific basin--may not only spread over the world, but also extend to the outer space. The coming conflict may shatter the global peace, and destroy our planet and its civilizations as Samuel Huntington foresaw in his provocative and pessimistic essay "The Clash of Civilizations?" published in 1993. Where Huntington succeeded as a perceptive and even prophetic pathologist, he failed as a healing doctor. He did attempt, however,to offer solutions to the problems in his 1998 book "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World Order", in which he had removed the question mark after "civilizations" in the title and added positive thinking with a more balanced analysis. However, scholars around the world have been increasingly suspicious of his motive. The media disclosure of U.S.soldiers’ abuse of Iraqi prisoners probably made things even more difficult for him and his followers.
