Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) has been used successfully to perform open heart surgery for approximately 60 years.During the several decades since the advent of CPB advancements in technique have been based on improved understanding of the physiologic consequences of CPB.In spite of improvements in the optimization of the many variables that clinicians can impact during CPB, no clear-cut consensus has been achieved nor have comprehensive guidelines been put forth.
