Adverse reproductive health effects of exposure to drinking water disinfection by-products in human

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are ubiquitous environment chemicals that present in drinking water.To date, more than 600 kinds of DBPs with different physicochemical and toxic properties have been identified in drinking water.Among these DBPs, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the most abundant compounds.Toxicological studies have suggested that exposure to DBPs can cause adverse reproductive health effects, including deceased semen quality and reproductive competence, reduced birth weight and length, as well as preterm delivery and birth defects.However, the evidence from epidemiological studies remains inconsistent, of which exposure assessment hinders the progress in accurately assigning DBP levels to health effects.In our research team, biomarkers of DBPs,including blood THMs and urinary trichloroacetic acid, were used to assess the association between exposure to drinking water DBPs and reproductive health effects.Our results suggest that exposure to DBPs is associated with decreased semen quality and adverse birth outcomes.
