The paper examines early Chinese medicines perspectives on human mentalit y using the three aspects of 神 shen model.The three aspects of shen are the source or root of the shen (本神 ben shen, as in the 《灵枢·本神》 Lingshu, Benshen), the original s hen (元神 yuan shen, as named by 李时珍 Li Shizhen), and the acquired shen (识神 shi shen).The model is similar to the idea of levels or layers of human mentality.The root s hen is the accumulation of experiences from all our ancestors that have been acquired and distilled by the course of human evolution; the original shen (元神 yuan shen) arises at conception, it instigates life and carries the new individuals inherited abilities and potentia 1s that are derived from the root shen; the acquired shen (识神 shi shen) is derived from the original shen and influenced by the postnatal environment.The three aspects of shen model provides a comprehensive explanation of the characteristics and abilities of human p sychology.
