Hip fracture is a major public health problem in Western countries and a rapidly growing problem in Asia and Latin America.The relative importance,and the mechanisms of genetic compared with acquired or environmental determinants of hip fracture risk remain unclear.A genetic epidemiological approach studying large numbers of female twins provides new insights into this important global health problem.
