A more accurate prediction of dam-break maximum instantaneous discharge for all types of breaches

  A set of formulas is developed to reveal the relation between weir flow and the maximum instantaneous dam-break discharge.The formula derivation is based on the equality of wave discharge and on the weir flow.The derived formulas include an up-limit formula, a low-limit formula, and a generalized formula.This new generalized formulas are capable of dealing with all types of breaches, including total dam collapse, horizontal partial dam-break, vertical partial dam-break, and combined horizontal and vertical partial dam-break; and they are not limited applied in concrete dams.This research find that the instantaneous dam-break discharge is relevant to the types of weirs, Formulas and their corresponding coefficients for instantaneous dam-break discharge, for overtopping and for gradual dam-break flood flow, can be integrated to formulas for different types of weirs.The values of the newly derived coefficients are validated according to available experiments and relevant literatures.This formula set was proved valid based on dam-break flow experiments and valid using the data recorded in the Malpasset dam break.It will allow a more accurate prediction of dam-break maximum instantaneous discharge for all types of breaches new or existing dams.
