The Caribbean has the second highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the world.In Trinidad and Tobago,HIV transmission is largely through sexual contact,initially in a homosexual cohort but with rapid transition to the heterosexual community.In 2001-2003 the Medical Research Centre in Port of Spain,Trinidad and Tobago participated in a multi-site international phase II trial of an HIV-1 canary pox vaccine (ALVAC-HIV vCP 1452)with or without boosting with MN rgpl20 in collaboration with vaccine trial sites in Port-au-Prince,Haiti,Rio de Janiero,Brazil and Lima,Peru.Trials were done under the aegis of the NIAID HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).There were 40 seronegative volunteers per site.The trial goals were to evaluate vaccine safety and immunogenicity in international settings where Clade B is transmitted.
