  A novel hydrophilic composite hydrogels (PEI/PDMAEMA) were prepared by the one-pot approach via the free radical polymerization on the amine nitrogens of Poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) and poly[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate](PDMAEMA)[1].In this study,the impacts of different concentration of PEI (0%,3%,5%,8%) on the hydrophilicity and adsorption abilities of composite materials and conditions of the reaction (temperature,time) were investigated.FT-IR and elemental analyses were employed to characterize the composition of the materials and Cr(Ⅵ) ions were chosen to estimate the adsorption ability of the copolymer.The results showed that the introduction of PEI could effectively improve the hydrophilicity of PDMAEMA,and then adjust the adsorption rate.At the same time,comparing with the PDMAEMA,the Cr(Ⅵ) adsorption amounts of PEI/PDMAEMA nearly tripled.So this intelligent hydrophilic composite materials are expected to be used for the adsorption of metal ions in the wastewater,such as Cr(Ⅵ),Cu(Ⅱ) or Fe(Ⅲ).
