@@ In Chomsky’s biolinguistic minimalism, recursion is claimed to be the only unique trait of human language. Hauser, Chomsky & Fitch (2002) conducted an experiment on vervet as a piece of evidence supporting this claim. In this study, we collected a large samples of the acoustic spectrograms of animal signals (birds’ call and mammals’ grunts), and find out that the number of their signal sequences are very limited and holistic in the sense that they are not subject to segmentation into discrete elements. If discreteness is the prequisite for recursion, then the answer to question of how come that animal signals are indiscrete will serve as the further explanation for what makes human language uniquely recursive.
