Biomass can be efficiently converted to a liquid product by fast pyrolysis.This "bio-oil" product can be further processed to hydrocarbon liquids by catalytic hydroprocessing.The fast pyrolysis step has now been commercially demonstrated at a scale up to 200 ton/day.Catalytic hydroprocessing has been applied to bio-oil in a bench-scale continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor system.
