2-Methyltetrahydrofuran(2-MeTHF),a biomass-derived compound, has recently been described as a promising and green solvent. The selective conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF)has been successfully achieved on Sn-MCM-41 catalyst in a biphasic system(H2O/2-MeTHF)for the first time.Hence,HMF yields over 50%were achieved in the biphasic system(H2O/2-MeTHF).Sn-MCM-41 catalyst displayed higher catalytic activity and much better thermostability in H2O/2-MeTHF than in other organic solvents and biphasic systems.Sn-MCM-41 could be recycled for the synthesis of HMF in the biphasic system and 39%of HMF yields were maintained after being reused for 3 times.2-MeTHF could be considered as a sustainable and greener solvent for the large scale use in biomass transformation in the future.
