This paper presents a study on some of the issues in topology optimization.A topology optimization model with nodal design variables is chosen for the 2D continuum structure.A 4-node hybrid stress element, the Pian-Sumihara element is used for the finite element analysis of heterogeneous 2D continuum. In the formulation used, pseudo-densities at nodal points are taken as topology design variables.
