The potential application of gold nanoparticles(GNPs)as radiosensitizers in cancer radiotherapy attracts considerate interest.1 According to calculations,2 radiosensitization occurs mostly via the damage induced by additional secondary electrons(SEs)emitted from the GNPs upon irradiation by high energy particles or photons. In this study,we test this hypothesis experimentally and give an estimate of the range of most SEs.Naked GNPs and GNPs coated either with thiolated undecane(S-C11H23),or dithiolated diethylenetriaminepentaacetic(DTDTPA)chelating agents, were synthesized.
