Professor Wolfgang Mastnak is Director of the Department of Music Education at the Department of Theater and Music in Munich, Germany. He has long been teaching and researching music psychology and music pedagogy and is an active pianist in the world music scene. Since 2004, Wolfgang Mastnak has been invited as guest professor at the Music Conservatory of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Professor Mastnak, a music psychologist, music educator and performer, often looks at and thinks through multiple perspectives. His essay analyzes and interprets metamorphoses and some passages from five operas since the second half of the 19th century from the perspective of psychopathology, social psychology and musical psychology. Professor Mastnak hopes that this kind of observation angle and interpretation method totally different from music symbolic analysis can help people to deepen the artistic experience through the understanding of the psychology of the characters in the play and finally transcend the art and rise to the reflection on the individual and the society.
