Bioactive ceramics coating on titanium (Ti) alloy play an important role for orthopedic application. In this study, akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7) bioactive coatings are prepared by plasma spraying technique. The coating mainly contains akermanitecrystal phase and portion of amorphous phase. The bond strength between the coatings and Ti-6Al-4V substrates is around38.7-42.2 Mpa, which is obviously higher than that of conventional hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings prepared by same coatingmethod. The prepared akermanite coatings showed distinct apatite-mineralization ability in simulated body fluid (SBF). Theresults obtained indicate that akermanite coatings may be a new approach for preparation of bone implants.
