After President Ramos came to power in 1992, the Philippine economy woke up from its previous nightmare and began to recover and made great strides. In 1994, the Philippine economy grew by 5.1%, doubling the number of 1993 and by 1995 and 1996, respectively, to 5.7% and 6.8% respectively. For the first time in the Philippines, the rate of economic growth in 1994 exceeded the country’s natural population growth rate and reversed the downturn in per capita GNP for more than a decade.
