This article describes the ablation mechanism of elastomeric thermal insulation materials for rocket motors and the main techniques used to characterize these materials. The importance of proper mating of the elastomeric ablative material is highlighted, listing examples of mechanical actions that improve the overall ablation performance of the insulation material due to the particular blend.
