在《方舆胜览》中,祝穆称:“建宁麻沙、崇化两坊产书,号为图书之府。”这里提到的“建宁”就是现在的福建省建阳县,“麻沙、崇化”是建阳县的两个坊镇。历史上,这两地的居民都曾以刻书为业,所出图书的特征和风格相似,但崇化书坊以其地处偏僻,交通不便,出版业不如麻沙先进发达,所以,所出图书以麻沙出名,并称为“麻沙本”或“建本”。
