香港居民私人车辆的拥有率低,85%居民行的问题要靠公用交通工具。而车辆数与道路长度之比,全世界最高,故道路交通严重拥挤。在香港,公共汽车是长期占统治地位的公用交通工具,然而1978年至1988年间铁路运输所占的份额由11%跃增至40%,同期铁路里程增加到118线路公里,增加近116%。地铁(MTR)和公司在屯门的西北轻轨铁路(LRT),通车里程已延长到86.5公里。34公里的九广铁路罗湖段业经改建为电气化双线,故香港铁路的情况如表1所示:
The ownership of private vehicles by Hong Kong residents is low, and 85% of residents rely on public transport. The number of vehicles and the length of the road ratio, the highest in the world, it is a serious road congestion. In Hong Kong, buses are the dominant long-term means of public transport. However, the share of rail transport jumped from 11% to 40% between 1978 and 1988, while the railway mileage increased to 116 lines by 118 kilometers over the same period. The MTR and the company’s Northwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Tuen Mun have been extended to 86.5 kilometers. The 34 km KCR Lo Wu section has been converted into an electrified two-lane bus.
