In vitro anther culture has been applied since 1975 to recover double haploid (DH) clones for green asparagus breeding.Out of about 2,000 androgenetic clones obtained 130 DH male and female clones were selected for plant vigor, spear quality, fertility and tolerance to diseases.Yearly, about 30 all-male newly two-ways or three-ways hybrids were included in a five-year trial; the most promising hybrids were then tested under farm condition and released for commercial purpose [1].All-male F1 hybrids quickly replaced the local asparagus populations and most of the hybrids from abroad, but during the last twenty-year a progressive higher trouble to select new improved hybrids was observed.Namely, it may be due to a narrow genetic diversity of asparagus anther donor genotypes, further reduced by anther culture.Therefore, interspecific hybridization among tetraploid A.officinalis cv.
