AR, abbreviation for Augmented Reality, is a technique computing the position and angle of camera images in real time and accordingly adding images to combine the virtual world with the real world for the interaction between the two. However, the technique is highly challenging and costly. Its high risk is still an important factor limiting its large-scale application in China.
A few publishing houses such as Zhejiang Juvenile & Children’s Publishing House, China University of Mining and Technology Press and China Children’s Press & Publication Group have tried to apply AR technique to books (mainly a single copy of book). Nevertheless, “Banana Rocket Science Picture Book” newly published by Jieli Publishing House becomes the first large-scale application of AR technique to book. Readers can see a flying space ship when the mark “AR” on the last page of the series’ I’m an Astronaut is within the shooting frame of software, and the space ship’s structure and full process of lift-off, decomposition and astronaut’s spacewalk if slightly changing the book’s direction (the AR mark should remain in the shooting frame). All the images have sound effects. The whole 3D image is actually an integrated three-dimensional demonstration of the content of the whole book. The series also covers many sciences elements such as architecture and dinosaur. Readers can watch fierce fight, ball kicking movement and extension of books’ content by operating with fingers.
The future potential and space of AR books are still in science and knowledge books. Jieli Publishing House will make new attempts in AR books, however, with the discreet idea that “The ultimate measuring standard is books’ content while the technique is just to perfect the books.”
