上世纪80年代中期,受新启蒙语境影响,也为摆脱来自赵树理、柳青的影响焦虑,陈忠实开始了创作转型。自此,“文化”成为他创作的核心语义。他认同的“文化心理结构”创作学说受到李泽厚的深刻影响。这种结构化、本质化的文化诉求,使他的创作抹除柳青味的同时,陷入一种单线前行的重复状态。而且,在“文化”的遮蔽下,他与一种在场化写作渐行渐远。《白鹿原》终成陈忠实无法走出的原地。
