This article describes a practical method of measurement that can be used to determine the relative amplitude and phase of a monopolar mode propagating in a multimode waveguide. The phase sensitive detector is used to measure the output signal of a fixed probe arranged in a quadrilateral of the cross-section of an enlarged waveguide. Detection of the output signal proportional to the modulus component, the data processing by hand to complete. The use of large waveguides can improve the accuracy, and the total multimode power can be measured at the same time as the analysis mode. In the standard rectangular waveguide, this method can detect the fourth order mode. The test described here uses a single-frequency signal source, but a signal source with a false frequency component can also be used if a properly tunable RF constant-pass filter is used.
