The “Outline for Teaching Elementary Chinese Syllabus” (tentative draft) states that reading texts and reading texts independently each year are “conducive to cultivating students' self-learning ability.” In recent years, I have given some guidance on how to guide students to read three kinds of texts and made some attempts. Now I will talk about some of my practices. In the fourth and the fifth grade textbooks, the three types of texts have the following characteristics: (i) They are generally longer than those of the first and second categories of texts; (ii) they are mostly famous articles of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign countries; (iii) They are diverse in genres and rich in content and knowledge
