In the spring of 2002, Joseph Stiglitz, a professor at Columbia University in the United States and winner of Nobel Prize in economics in 2001, published a new book titled “Globalization and Dissatisfaction with It.” The publication of this book soon aroused a debate in the international academic community. Stiglitz served as chief economist at the World Bank. On June 28, 2002, at a press conference and symposium that the World Bank presented for the book, Kenneth Rogoff and Steele, chief economist and head of research at the International Monetary Fund, Glitz started a heated debate. After the meeting, Rogoff distributed an “Open Letter to Stiglitz” criticizing Stiglitz’s views with a pungent and sarcastic tone. Since then, John Williams, a senior fellow at the Institute of International Economic Research, and famous scholars such as Harvard University professor Benjamin Friedman have also written articles to join the discussion.
