Jin Feibao, a passionate 55-year-old mountaineer and marathon runner, completed 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days across all 16 prefectures of southwest China’s Yunnan Province on August 26.
The challenge was created by Jin himself, named Fairyland 100 Marathons and involved only countryside routes. Jin ran a total of 4,219.5 km, taking him past nine major lakes, six major river systems and numerous ethnic minority communities along the way.
Over the course of the 100 days, Jin’s challenge allowed more people to understand the sport and promoted the development of marathon running in Yunnan.
Jin has also completed the Explorers Grand Slam, an adventurers challenge to reach the North Pole, the South Pole and the highest mountain peaks of each of the seven continents. In addition, at the beginning of the year, he participated in the seven-day challenge of seven marathons on seven continents.
Ride Hailing Company Ordered to Guarantee Safety
  Guangming Daily August 28
A 20-year-old woman was raped and killed by a driver on August 24 after using Didi Chuxing’s carpool services. This is the second passenger murdered by a Didi driver in recent months following the killing of a flight attendant in Zhengzhou, central China’s Henan Province, in May. The Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Public Security ordered Didi Chuxing—one of the leading ride hailing companies in China—to overhaul its business and the company has suspended its carpool services.
The case has exposed loopholes in Didi’s management, as a complaint was fi led against the driver by a passenger the previous day who alleged that the driver had demanded she sit in the front seat multiple times, driven to a remote area and followed her after she got out of the car. However, the complaint was not dealt with in time. In addition, Didi’s monitoring system failed to detect that the driver had steered away from the set route.
Although Didi has conducted the screening of drivers’ criminal records and used a facial recognition system to make sure the driver and the car match, it needs to do more. For example, it should evaluate after-service and emergency complaints and deal with the latter in a more urgent manner.
It should also raise alerts about complaints involving personal assault by drivers and freeze the drivers’ accounts when necessary.
Moreover, the company should strengthen cooperation with the police because timely action by law enforcement can effectively curb criminal activities. Training Qualifi ed Teachers
  Outlook Weekly August 27
Although the overall standard of teachers in China has improved remarkably since the beginning of reform and opening up, their moral standards and professional level still need improvement in order to meet the needs of contemporary society.
Some teacher behavior exposed by the media in recent years involving physically punishing students, taking gifts from parents or even sexually abusing students has seriously hurt the students involved and damaged the profession’s reputation as a whole.
There are also some teachers who stick to the traditional way of teaching where they do all the talking and students just listen, without any interaction taking place between the two.
China’s teacher training system underwent a major overhaul in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with teacher training no longer limited to normal universities but open to all higher learning institutions.
As a result, the amount of time devoted to teaching methods and practices was greatly reduced at many normal universities.
In addition, the mediocre salary of primary and middle school teachers has resulted in the profession’s lack of attractiveness. In rural areas, the scarcity of qualif ied teachers is even more serious.
To improve the overall caliber of teachers, experts suggest creating a social atmosphere which holds teachers in high respect and guarantees their welfare.
In the meantime, universities can establish teachers’ colleges to strengthen teacher training.
  Copyright Protection
  Legal Daily August 25
The Hangzhou Internet Court, set up last year for the adjudication of e-commerce and Internetrelated disputes, ruled on August 20 that two Chinese companies must pay compensation of 150,000 yuan ($22,016) to Entertainment One UK Ltd. and Astley Baker Davies Ltd. for producing and selling a toy kitchen set unlawfully using Peppa Pig’s image.
The two British companies, which co-own the Peppa Pig animated TV series, have registered their copyright to the character in the United States and China.
Jufan Ltd. in Shantou, south China’s Guangdong Province, produced the kitchen set, while Shantou-based Jiale Toys Industrial sold the kitchen set on Taobao, a business-to-consumer website owned by e-commerce giant Alibaba, without the licensing of the copyright owners. They were ordered to shoulder their legal responsibilities and pay for their infringement. The ruling shows China’s resolve to protect intellectual property rights (IPR) in accordance with the law and sends a signal to those who steal copyrights from abroad.
As a contracting party to a number of international conventions on IPR protection, China must obey the stipulation of the conventions. Otherwise, the country’s international image will be damaged.
The open trial of the case in Hangzhou will serve to prevent other companies from committing similar offenses and improve China’s international image as a committed protector of IPR.
