Major scientific research activities have linked global warming with extreme weather patterns such as droughts, monsoons and floods. There were theories that suggested that the drought in the Sahel primarily was caused by overexploitation of natural resources by humans through overgrazing, deforestation and poor land management. However, in the late 1990s, advances in climate model studies showed that the drought was not only caused by humans, but also by natural large scale climate changes. In the same vein, it is now widely accepted that the late 20th century Sahel drought that also spread across the Sudano-Sahelian Region (SSR) of Nigeria was likely a climatic response to changing sea surface temperature patterns, and that it could be viewed as a combination of natural variability superimposed upon an anthropogenieally forced regional drying trend. These climate model simulations also project that human-induced climate change could lead to a 25% reduction in Sahel rainfall by year 2100.
