British geography researcher Appleton proposed his significantly influential concept of prospect-refuge in 1975,emphasizing the key role of mans self-protection instinct in his cognition and evaluation of scenery.Yet it remains a question whether western environmental psychology is applicable for Chinese as a result of the drastically different environment and culture.This research takes traditional Chinese landscape paintings by the four renowned painters in Ming Dynasty as samples,based on the analytic methods of Appletons theory,seeking to grasp the spatial cognition tendency of the painter expressed in classical Chinese paintings through identification and categorization of architecture arrangements on the tableau,attempting to test the applicability of prospect-refuge theory in the aestheticism of classical Chinese landscape paintings.As an artistic conception particular for Chinese people,artistic conception is the soul of Chinese landscape paintings and the special cognitive structure and model characteristic to China,which carries the core value of Chinese psychology.On the other hand,the discussion on how the concept of artistic conception echoes and matches with Appletons prospect-refuge theory is of significant research value.
