The study of mammalian transcriptomics has a long history started with initial work on expressed sequence tag (EST) since early 1990s.However, understanding the complexity of transcriptomics is still at its infancy. The reasons are multi-fold.First, lacking basic, systematically-acquired, reproducible, and robust datasets-based on thorough considerations of the complexity at different regulatory levels, including organism, cell, and molecule-prevents establishment of a simple birds eye view on essential structure and variability of the transcriptomes.
