Within the United States,HIV/AIDS is having a detrimental impact on the African American community.While African Americans comprise 12-13% of the US population,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the group represented 50% of the new cases of HIV/AIDS in 2004 and 49% of all reported cases of AIDS within the US (CDC,2006).Between the years of 2001-2004,the rate of diagnosis decreased overall for the population,however the rate of infection among African Americans was still higher than the rate among any other racial and ethnic group (CDC,2004).
