According to the World Health Organization, the worldwide numbers of obese and overweight individuals is near 2 billion.Signals from the gut and fat stores communicate with neurons in the brain to initiate physical activity and control food intake. An understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate these response in brain neurons is imperative in identifying gene regulatory pathways that control adult body weight.Mice with a targeted deletion in the neuronal transcription factor, Nhlh2 are used to study the molecular mechanisms of adult body weight control.
