Cobalt is a bond used as matrix in diamond impregnated tools.Particularly, it is widely used in gang saws to cut marble.In this paper different cobalt powders were analysed in order to evaluate their potential for diamond retention and therefore cutting ability.With this purpose mechanical properties, hardness and tensile strength were investigated.The superior structure stability of Eurotungstene powders was proven by hardness measurements and microstructure examinations at different sintering temperatures.Also, no graphitization was observed even at high sintering temperatures.All these results contribute to high diamond retention and explain the success of cobalt in the alternating movement of gang saws.
