Jatropha curcus (Jatropha) is an oil bearing tropical shrub that holds great potential as a feedstock plant for sustainable energy supply. It can grow on marginal soils with low nutrient content, hence does not compete for crop land. Its seeds contain up to 35% of high quality oil that can be converted to biodiesel for land transportation and bio jet fuel for air transportation. It is, however, not domesticated and very variable and unpredictable in field performance. There have been a lot of efforts on improving seed productivity and field uniformity of Jatropha through breeding (traditional breeding and genetic modification) and optimization of agronomic practices.Strategies and successes in improving Jatropha productivity since 2006 by TLL/JOil partnership will be shared. We estimate that oil productivity of 3 tons per ha is achievable by 2020.
