The physical ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, telomeres, are special DNA-protein structures composedof doublestranded (TTAGGG)n repetitive DNA sequences and proteins associated with telomere DNA.They play critical roles in the development of cancer and maintenance of the sustained growth of cancer cells.In normal human somatic cells, telomeres lose short stretches of DNA each time a cell divides.After a number of cell divisions, telomeres become critically short, signaling the cells to growth arrest.Cancer cells, different from normal cells, must bypass this telomere shortening induced growth arrest to achieve their unlimited growth capacity.In about 85% of cancer cells, telomere length is maintained by a special enzyme called telomerase, which adds (TTAGGG)n repeats to telomere ends.Telomerase is normally inactive in normal cells.
