The low-temperature-low-pressure methanol synthesis from syngas over CuO/ZnO/Al2O3-based catalysts is a mature and well-developed process and many large industrial plants are in operation.Due both to thermodynamic equilibrium and to the high exothermicity, CO conversion per pass in commercial packed-bed (PB) reactors is limited to 60-80% and, due to its reactivity, CO-rich syngas (as e.g.coming from coal gasification) is not allowed in large-scale methanol reactors [1].Onset of significant catalyst sintering occurs at 300℃ [2], whereas intraporous diffusion resistances are already noticeable at 245℃ [3].Large recycles of unconverted gas are hence necessary to ensure high overall syngas conversions in commercial plants.This inevitably results in high operating costs and large pressure drop.
