Scientific research has been unable to keep pace with the rapid advances in the applications of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in our working and living environment. This delay has led to widespread concerns among the general public and workforce that there are unresolved health issues that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. With growing concern being expressed that exposure to RF-EMF may cause various health effects, the Ministry of International Affairs and Communications,Japan developed a research project since 1997 being conducted firstly by the Committee to Promote Research on the Possible Biological Effect of Electromagnetic Fields (1997-2006) and secondly by the Research Committee on the Possible Health Effects of RF Electromagnetic Fields (2008-to date) to find whether there were adverse health effects that needed to be addressed or not at levels below international guidelines exposure to RF-EMF.
