Gastrodia elata Blume (Tianma in Chinese), a popular Chinese herbal medicine, has been used for many years as an anticonvulsant, an analgesic and a sedative against vertigo, general paralysis, epilepsy and tetanus.Some phenols, such as p-hydorxybenzyl alcohol and gastrodin, were regarded as its marked bioactive components.Howerver, parishins, the conjugates of gastrodin and citric acid, were found to be enriched in Gastrodia elata Blume in our previous studies, which made these compounds to be more characteristic marked compounds for quality control and bioactivity study.
