Maternal exposure to transition and other metals

  Most studies of metals exposure focus on the heavy metals and others commonly found in various compartments of the environment and for which there is clear evidence of adverse health impacts in occupational and community studies.There are many other metals(the transition metals in particular)in common use in electronics,semiconductor and defence industries and which are naturally present in the environment and can also be concentrated via industrial processes.We have limited information in terms of non occupational human exposure to these metals.As part of a study of maternal exposure to persistent toxic substances we were able to analyse samples of blood,urine and drinking water for these transition and rare metals using ICP-MS.The metals investigated were antimony(Sb),beryllium(Be),bismuth(Bi),cesium(Cs),gallium(Ga),rubidium(Rb),silver(Ag),strontium(Sr),thallium(Tl),thorium(Th)and vanadium(V).One hundred and seventy two pregnant women provided samples of whole blood and a first void urine sample just before the birth of their baby.They also provided a drinking water sample and completed a questionnaire on factors that may influence exposure.
