  The Korean War was broke out in 1950 and lasted for three years.At the end of the Korean War The Republic of Korea (ROK) and Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) government agreed to make a truce line.Area at two kilometers from the truce line from each side is called DMZ (demilitarized zone).Since then a lot of mines were laid at this area by the military of ROK,DPRK,China,USSR and USA.In 2002,ROK and DPRK government decided to re-connect the Dong-hae railway and road in DMZ,which has been disconnected since 1953.During construction work,mines were exploded and many construction equipments were introduced in this area.The objectives of this study were to investigate the potential soil contamination by explosives from demining processes and by hazardous organic compounds from construction work,and to survey the physicochemical properties of the soils at this area,where access by human being has not been allowed for more than 50 years.Soil samples were collected from Jeo-jin checkpoint to military demarcation line (MDL).Physico-chemical properties of the soils such as pH,EC,total-N,available-P,CEC,exchangeable cations (-Ca,-Mg,-K,-Na),organic matter content,and heavy metal contents were determined.Explosives such as NG (nitroglycerin),RDX (cyclonite),TNT (trinitrotoluene),tetryl (nitramine) and TPH (total petroleum hydro-carbon) and BTEX (benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylene) were also determined.The physicochemical properties of the soils from study area were not significantly different from those of cultivated upland soil and forest soil in ROK.Partly,soils around Geum-gang bridge showed characteristics of potential acid sulfate soil by low pH and high organic matter content.Heavy metal contents were lower than the warning standards of soil contaminant for soil environment conservation law of ROK.Explosive compounds and hazardous organic compounds were not detected at any soils.
